WASHINGTON COUNTY VISITOR CENTER
Washington, PA
The B & O
Railroad Station was built at the foot of Main Street in 1892. The one story
station was constructed in the shingle style with rock faced sandstone
walls, wide, heavily bracketed eaves, and a slate roof.
LDA directed a complete
restoration of the building to house the offices of the Washington County
Tourist and Promotion Agency and a Visitor Center. The dropped ceiling was
removed to expose the original beamed ceiling and clerestory windows and the
floor structure was reconstructed. The waiting rooms were restored and the
baggage area was reworked to accomodate offices.
Green
technology improvements included high insulation values and reuse of natural
ventilation and natural lighting. Beaded board walls and floor joists were
recycled for use elsewhere in the structure.
The project included
restoration of the adjoining train platform which was dedicated to Veterans,
many of whom used this platform to depart for active duty.
