ALUMNI CONCERT HALL
Carnegie Mellon
University
Pittsburgh, PA
The Alumni Concert
Hall was originally an exhibition hall within the College of Fine Arts
building designed by Henry Hornbostel.
In the 1970s it was
converted to a recital hall for the music department and later used
as performance space for the drama department. LDA was commissioned to
restore the original classical detailing of the space including the
skylight, the curved colonnade and decorative plaster entablature and coved
ceiling.
The primary use of the
room is now for orchestra rehearsals, and recording sessions and small group
recitals.. LDA worked with the University’s acoustics consultant to design
the means to “tune” the space for new use which included sound absorbing
material on the walls and ceiling, sound diffusers and concave glazing
in the skylight. LDA also consulted on lighting that would be
adaptable for the various uses of the room and provide enough illumination
for the musicians to read their music.
