BAKER HALL 360
Carnegie Mellon
University
Pittsburgh, PA
Working for both
Facilities Management and the user group, the Department of Humanities and
Social Sciences, LDA was asked to redesign an area on the top floor of
historic Baker Hall for faculty and graduate student offices. The
space had previously been altered with a dropped ceiling and small,
densely-built private offices.
LDA opened up the full volume of the
space, exposing dramatic truss work and creating an expansive central area
for open office systems, while providing private offices around the
perimeter. Designs for ironwork detailing and clerestory windows into the
perimeter hallways were derived from historic features of the building’s
exterior.
A particular challenge
in finishing the space was the design of indirect lighting to provide
suitable ambient illumination at the user level without over lighting the
volume of space above. LDA consulted the lighting manufacturer and
worked with the electrical engineer to address those needs.
