PHIPPS HALL OF BOTANY
Pittsburgh, PA
Botany Hall was
built on the grounds of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in 1904 as
a classroom facility for the conservatory. Many interior alterations were
made starting in the 1930s. By 1998, when restoration was started, the
classroom spaces had been sub-divided into smaller rooms.
The rehabilitation
included the removal of all these added partitions and the complete gutting
of the lower level which had severe insect and water damage. An elevator and
ramp were added to make the building accessible.
The original stepped
lecture hall space, which occupies all of the main level, was restored to
its original appearance and is equipped with state-of-the-art audio/visual
systems. The lower level contains a flexible classroom space.
The exterior masonry was
restored and the modern windows were replaced with replicas of the original.
