FRICK CAR & CARRIAGE
MUSEUM
Pittsburgh, PA
LDA analyzed a number of sites over a 4 year period for the Pittsburgh
Transportation Museum group to find a home for their splendid collection of
early 20th century automobiles. The studies concluded
with their joining with the well known Frick Art and Historical Center where
we designed a major addition to the carriage house which housed the
Frick collection of cars and Carriages.
The site for the new
building is a lawn area between Clayton, the Frick house of 1892 and the
Frick Art Museum of 1968. While the campus contains examples of
Architecture in both the Romantic and Classical styles, the Romantic style
was chosen as being appropriate to both the main house and the early 20th
century era when carriage house and garages took on their style cues from
the architecture of the main house.
The building
incorporates roof dormers to provide natural light and open steel trusses to
provide an uninterrupted display area. It has been designed for future
expansion of the display area into the lower level.
