HOWE CHILDS GATEHOUSE

Chatham College

Pittsburgh, PA

The Howe Childs House is one of Pittsburgh’s oldest extant houses, and a rare local example of America’s first suburban style.

The house stands along Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh’s East End at the entrance to Chatham College. Chatham acquired the house which was in a state of advanced disrepair, and asked LDA to prepare plans for its restoration.

LDA prepared design drawings which restored the exterior of the building to its early appearance including its earliest paint colors, and rearranged the interior to accommodate 5 guest suites on the upper levels with public reception and meeting rooms on the buildings first floor. The restoration required extensive structural rebuilding of the wood framing and installation of sophisticated environmental control systems.

LDA selected all of the interior finishes and furniture to complement the historic house and directed the exterior landscaping and addition of a 10 car "parking garden". The house now serves as Chatham College’s "front door" and visitor reception center.
