RICHMOND CITY HALL OFFICES

Richmond, VA

LDA was retained to provide full architectural services for the restoration and adaptive use of this Victorian Gothic structure dating to 1894 and designated one of the nation’s 50 most prized municipal buildings by the American Institute of Architects. LDA preserved and restored the building’s granite exterior and ornate four story atrium. The atrium contains cast iron, plaster, and tin ornament, wood moldings and wainscot, 55 brass chandeliers, a coffered and skylit ceiling, a monumental iron stair, and glass block and tile floors.

LDA’s challenge was to introduce modern mechanical and life safety systems into the building’s heavy masonry construction, where interior walls were two to three feet thick, while preserving the magnificent Victorian spaces and ornamentation. New systems included HVAC utilizing four vertical risers and a minimum horizonal distribution system, two new high speed elevators, sprinklers, and new enclosed fire stairs
