Designed by Rutan and Russell, this
park pavilion is the only remaining structure of more than a dozen from the
park’s early years. It has served as a picnic pavilion, a garden center, and
a nature center. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy wished to restore the
building as a visitor’s center and a first step in complete park
restoration.
LDA developed a design
that allows the building to function for a wide variety of uses including a
gift shop, cafe, and meeting room in addition to its function as a visitor
orientation and information center. The building is also designed to
function smoothly for social events including parties, weddings, and dinners
which will provide rental income to the group.
The project includes
restoration of all exterior doors and windows and addition of a terrace on
the park side of the building. The heavy timber roof structure was
restored and a new slate roof was installed.
