MOTOR SQUARE GARDEN
Pittsburgh, PA
Built in 1900 as the
largest and grandest of the City's four market houses, the East Liberty
Market House has survived by virtue of its large, flexible interior space
which has housed a variety of uses. LDA was asked to adapt it for
retail use.
The challenge in the
conversion lay in maximizing leaseable floor space while still retaining the
spacious, open effects of the building's volume and conforming to the
Secretary of the Interior's Standards and local codes.
LDA developed a
three-level scheme with a large atrium and escalators under the dome.
Basic restoration work on the building included cleaning and painting of the
interior and restoration of the windows and the tin-clad, steel framed dome.
The elaborate truss-work received added enhancement through creative
color and lighting. The project included all new mechanical,
electrical, and life safety systems.
